Live Avatar Capture Montage

LionTree's 2023 annual retreat carried a theme: not everyone is together at the same time, but everyone is interconnected. We wanted to make that idea literal, and LiteScan — our avatar scanner — was the tool to do it.

Scan every guest individually throughout the event, then unite their avatars in one shared virtual space: a montage of togetherness that couldn't physically happen. Each guest would also receive a personal keepsake of their own capture.

I led the program with my team, from the pre-production 3D scanning of the resort through the real-time processing pipeline and the final montage delivered on site.

In the weeks before the event we captured and prepared a 3D environment of the resort, pre-planned the virtual camera movements, and blocked placeholder positions for every guest. During the event, LiteScan scanned each guest individually, and their avatars were processed in real time and slotted into the montage as they came in. As an immediate gift, each guest received a video of their own capture composited into settings around the resort.

The finished montage was completed within hours of the last scan and unveiled at the event itself, with every attendee in it. Speed was the point: guests watched a shared virtual gathering that had been assembled around them as the retreat unfolded. The personalized capture videos gave everyone something to take home besides the memory.
