Galvanized Souls: New Generation
In early 2015, 360 video barely existed as a medium. Nearly every existing example was a static, single-view shot — no hard cuts, no camera movements, no narrative. Nobody had made a real music video in the format.
Make one. A 360 music video with cuts, movement, and story, pulling inspiration from artists across the spectrum — from the Beastie Boys to the boy bands of the late '90s. The goal was an engaging video that also pushed what the medium could do.
I founded Springbok in early 2015 and launched the company with this video for the rock band Galvanized Souls. It was our proof of concept and our calling card in the same piece.
No platform at the time could properly play the video, so we built a dedicated mobile app to distribute it. The release came with branded merchandise: a limited-edition vinyl record and a Google Cardboard headset, so fans could watch the piece the way it was meant to be seen.
Google selected New Generation for YouTube 360's inaugural library — one of a dozen experiences on the platform at launch. The project went on to win numerous industry awards and was cited at tech and entertainment conferences as a benchmark for the medium. Not bad for a first job.
